About Us

Gardenspace Design Studio is located in the heart of the Wood River Valley in south-central Idaho. We specialize in residential design, as well as public and urban spaces, ecological restoration, parks, and native/water-wise design.

Our team brings the advantage of local awareness in our High Desert community, utilizing resource efficiency and holistic design. We honor and deeply value our relationships with our clients and the contractors with whom they choose to work.

Dean Hernandez

Dean, principle designer and owner of Gardenspace Design, brings over 30 years of landscape design-build experience, 18 of which have been here in the Wood River Valley. Dean brings an extensive knowledge of all aspects of the design and construction process to Gardenspace Design projects.

Dean has developed a design philosophy based on the integration of hardy non-indigenous plant material into the native pallet, ultimately providing greater options and possibilities for his design aesthetic while being sensitive to local environmental and water needs. Dean’s passion for landscape design has been influenced by world travel and observation of varied plant communities and garden styles, and he was greatly inspired by the historical gardens of the East Coast where he was raised.

Dean studied landscape architecture at Temple University in Philadelphia, as well as the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Dean’s local work includes park spaces, demonstration gardens and residential projects.

If not in the office designing, Dean can be found enjoying the many outdoor opportunities that abound - whether mountain biking, snowboarding, fly fishing or camping off the beaten trail. Dean lives in Hailey, Idaho with his wife and daughter.
